I am a mom and two of my children are boys, ages 6 and 8. I still take them into the women's with me, when we are out and about. They are also currently in swim lessons at the Y and we use the women's locker room. I change them in a bathroom stall that is in a separate part of the locker room and then make them follow my feet, with their heads down, as we pass through and exit into the pool area. We have been going for a few years and no one has ever said anything, until last Sunday. A maintenance woman gave me a bunch of grief about having my boys in there, telling me to hurry up. Have you ever had anyone say anything to you, when bringing children of the opposite sex in a bathroom or locker room? Yes

I was flabbergasted by her reaction, so I emailed the Y the next day, to find out if there is a rule about this. It turns out their policy is that children of the opposite gender may use the locker rooms with their parents only up until the age of 5. Six-year-olds and older must use the appropriate room, by themselves if need be. Do you think this policy is age appropriate? Yes

I would just change them at home, except we live 40 minutes away and I don't really want them riding home in their wet suits for that great of a distance. If you were me, would you now knowingly break the rules and keep doing what you were doing, or send the boys into the men's locker room alone? I'd keep doing what you were doing.
