Research has found that young children whose parents read to them daily have been exposed to at least 290,000 more words by the time they enter kindergarten than kids who aren't read to regularly. And depending on how much daily reading time kids get, that number can go up to over a million words. If you have/had kids in your life, do/did you read to them?

Books can also help kids learn how to handle their own feelings in healthy ways. Seeing characters in books experience big emotions like anger or sadness lets kids know that these feelings are normal — and gives them a chance to talk about their own difficult feelings, too. If you do/did read to any kids in your life, did you find books to be helpful in helping them express their feelings?

There are many people who can't afford books for their kids. I used to scour second hand stores when my 4 kids were young and was able to obtain many interesting books for them. Recently I've been visiting a "Click to Give" website, where a simple click can help fund books, supplies and educational opportunities for children. And, best of all... It's free! It's part of the GreaterGood charity sites and can be found at: https://theliteracysite.greatergood.com/clicktogive/lit/home -- Is this something you would be interested in doing? (FYI, this site relies on ads, so if you do use it, please disable any AdBlockers. Thank you.)

I have 4 adult children, ages 21 to 40 and 16 grandkids, ages 1 to 16. Three of my 4 kids were all avid readers and really enjoyed getting new books. The one that didn't enjoy reading? Well, she has 6 kids, 2 step-kids and 1 god-child and has recently published 2 children's books, which she also illustrated! If you have/had kids in your life, did they ever do something that just totally surprised you?

These are my daughter's books. The main character is her youngest daughter who is 3 years old. They're available on the Barnes and Noble website. (https://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/Lucy%20Rivera) I suffer from severe social anxiety and find it very difficult to interact with people, in real life and online. So, I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to get my local library to include these books as a good read for (grand)parents/guardians and kids. I would truly appreciate any helpful suggestions. Thank you. Also, thank you to everyone for taking the time to read and answer all of this! I've never done anything like this before and I hope that I did an okay job.

If you have a title or an Author in mind, use "bookfinder.com", find the nearest bookseller, and order on-line from this bookseller website. Amazon also have a huge selection of books for kids. Try to find a psychotherapist for your social anxieties reflexes. These may influence your kids behavioral patterns.

Usually if you donate a book or books to a local library and explain why you are donating them, they will include them in their collection. If you don't want to do it in person, you can mail the books to the library with a cover letter explaining them. To make it even more appealing, ask your daughter to sign the books.

You did a great job. I, too, love to read (and my parents read to me when I was a child. They quit reading to me about 4 months before I started school (first grade--no kindergarten, etc back in those days in my area). My teacher told them that I read everything I could get my hands on. Re the GreaterGood folks, I click on their website every day and "click to give". Re your library, why not send a copy of the books with a letter or note asking them to review them and possibly add them to their reading curriculum?

Yes, you do a nice job! I read to my children every night, or if I was gone the babysitter or daddy read to them. I'd often read to them during the day also, and our eldest daughter taught hrerself to read from the cereal boxes at breakfast! They are still avid readers, are world travelers, volunteers; very community minded and great adults. I attribute it to their father, and all the reading. Going to the library and bookmobile were at least a twice a week event.

sometimes small town libraries can't afford to purchase new books, however, they do have a trade system, they can put a shout out to other libraries to see if they have those books on hand and can borrow them for a short time on loan so that the consumer does not have to purchase them.

Talk to your local librarian and see if they will let you or your daughter read the book to the kids, do an event around it. No ideas sorry, but I think it is a great thing to do. My mom read to us as kids especially when we traveled by car to see our grandparents in another province. I was obsessed with reading and being dyslexic taught myself to read by grade 4. They were teaching site reading then what a mistake. I am elderly now but just moved with a library of about 5000 books. My daughter and granddaughters do still read as well but more on screens than on paper books and not as avidly as their grandma.

I grew up with both of my parents and my grandmother reading to me most days when I was young. About 30 years ago I spent a couple years as a literacy tutor. I had to go through several months of training before starting. One of the things I learned about literacy, is if children do not ever see their parents reading at home, the children are much less likely to learn to read well, if at all. If you read, and read to your children, it is pretty much a guarantee that your children will be readers, too.
