This is for my fellow Canadian mostly. I am not sure what the education system is like in the U.S. Sometimes it seems like schools are experimenting with our kids education. I know for my kids they changed a few things over the years so the type of education my oldest vs my youngest received is a little different. Which of these changes have your kids experienced?

The New Math!? I can't really explain it, because I never did understand it. Number bonding. Decomposing, box multiplication. Were your kids taught this? what do you make of it?

Cursive. My son is 17, graduating from High School this year. He was never taught cursive. Signs his name by printing. Can't read it. I don't know when they stopped teaching it, but now my 2 youngest are being taught it again. They started it again a couple years ago when they were in middle school. I was taught cursive in like grade 3! What do you think? Is cursive needed in the computer age?

I fine with them not teaching it. its an archaic practice created for the limitations of quill pens anyway

How grading is done. It used to be more clear. You had your A's, B's, C's, D's and F's or percentages that corresponded to those grades. Maybe in the younger years they had what they do now with U for usually, C for consistently, etc. Now they have that along with a number system from 1 to 4. What do you think of this grading system?

Exams. For the longest time during my oldest sons education, they eliminated end of the year exams. Now they just base it off the tests and assignments over the year alone. Now they are bring them back in his final year. What do you think?

I think they shouldn't have them. They are mostly just memorization anyway and are not a good indicator of what they have learned, especially when you consider that some kids are just not good test takers

They should have them. It helps create a standard for all schools so that it can better guarantee that all kids are getting an equal education.
