I think parents should train their children to be ready to walk or take the bus alone. The main point is not the age but the safety guidelines the children need to know and follow.

Always let them know they can come to you about anything. Support them and believe them. Like if they're being bullied at school or if some adult makes them feel uncomfortable.. If you can, take & pick up your kids to & from school yourself. If you're not able, have a trusted friend or neighbor help you out. We were lucky when our kids were in school, because we had a bunch of neighbors who became our friends and we all looked out for each other and our kids were never, ever alone when taking the bus to and from school.

Teach them the "don't take candy from strangers" and a "stranger" does not become a friend just because you have seen him many times, some of which he is "innocently" giving out candy to your classmates. Hopefully your child will voluntarily mention this guy and you can be sure from then on out to pick up your child from school.
