Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born in 1910 in Skopje, a part of the then Ottoman Empire, to a family of devout Albanian Catholics. At 18, she moved to Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto. In 1929, she relocated to India and took the name Teresa,  in honor of Therese de Lisieux, the patron saint of missionaries. (Teresa is the Spanish spelling of this name.) She is best known for founding the Missionaries of Charity. She died in 1997 at the age of 87 and was officially canonized as St. Teresa of Calcutta in 2016 by Pope Francis.
