(Source: lonelyplanet.com) One of the more unusual places in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is this amazing urban architectural site. A series of old tunnels, sewers and cisterns (built from 1730 onwards) were constructed above a river tributary and provided the base for one of BA’s oldest settlements, which later became a family mansion and then tenement housing and shops. The Zanjón is the dream of Jorge Eckstein recovering a valuable piece of history. He found these ruins in 1986 after purchasing land for a restaurant project and then spent years renovating them into what you see today. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s history; meticulously reconstructed brick by brick and very attractively lit, this site also contains several courtyards and even a watchtower. There are a few relics on display in the various halls and rooms, but the highlights are the spaces themselves.

The chemical engineer who owns this place wanted to open a restaurant. He financed restoring the building during 20 years without any help from the government or companies. He got recognized for his impressive work by UNESCO and many international institutions. Curiously, he never got any award from the Argentinian government. Being 80 years old, this is something that hurts him lots. Can you mention any other big personal project oriented to recover a historical place anywhere in the world?

There were a few curious facts about this place. One of them was that the original rich family left due to the threat of the Yellow Fever. It killed 14000 people back then. They used to purify the water they kept in a big deposit with water turtles. They were useful to eat bugs, keep the water clean from leaves and avoid getting rotten. It does not look like nice, but it was much better than the water the other people had to drink straight from the river with the contamination produced by the waste of dead cows or the women who used to wash the clothes there. Did you hear about any other old way of purifying water in the 1800s?

Another curious fact is that it had a small room where they used to lock the slaves when punished, You could look at it through the metal bars it had on the top. Unusual for a country which barely saw slaves. The house also has one level where the actual city is, a second level, like a floor down, which was the real level of the old city. Houses used to be built on top of the previous ones. And finally, tunnels below which were hiding small rivers to avoid floods. Each neighbor had to pay to build a part of the tunnels as a way to protect the city. Many years later, the government took care of that. Are there any unusual facts you can mention about any old places? If you do, please give us more details in the comments below. Thanks.
