Whether an attraction qualifies as a tourist trap is often in the eye of the beholder, and some are still beloved by locals. Some are iconic locales now overrun or overrated. Others lure road trippers out of the way of their intended destinations. They might be cheesy, inauthentic, overpriced, crowded, boring, ugly, or just plain not worth the time. Here is a collection of American tourist traps that may leave you wishing you'd stayed at home. Cheapism is my source for this series.

South Dakota: Wall Drug Store. Wall Drug, located in Wall, S.D., is a quirky roadside attraction known for its old-time Western feel. Founded in 1931, Wall Drug features shopping, dining, homemade donuts, Western art, unique attractions, and its legendary free ice water and 5‑cent coffee, welcoming over two million visitors each year from around the world. Although it attracts many visitors with various activities, some feel it's too crowded and touristy. Attractions include photo ops, shopping, and dining, though prices are often high and layout confusing. Parking can be tough, but the experience remains memorable. Does 5 cents for a cup of coffee sound like an incredible price throwback to you?
