Sirmilik National Park and Tallurutiup Imanga (proposed) National Marine Conservation Area are in Nunavut. The landscape in the high Arctic is defined by ice; however, Lancaster Sound is ice-free most of the year. The open water areas at the edge of ice packs, polynyas, provide shelter for marine mammals and birds, and have been integral for the survival of the peoples that have inhabited the area over the last three millennia.
