While the respected and esteemed are laid to rest in Arlington's national cemetery, we also must not forget those who were not as notable and unfortunately possibly forgotten. Hart Island Cemetery is as noted on an island located in the Bronx at the Western end of The Long Island sound. It is New York City's public cemetery and the final resting place for more than one million people. Most burials are in mass graves and unmarked. The remains are from the poor, unclaimed, stillborn, AIDS victims, as well as victims from mass disease outbreaks such as COVID. The first person to be buried on the island was Louisa Van Slyke, a 24-year-old housekeeper who was born at sea and died of Tuberculosis on April 10, 1869. The placement of a cemetery on an island which is not easily accessible except by boat, reminds me of the time in history when the outcasts and marginalized were hidden and forgotten about. I think it's important to remember those who were and are still forgotten about whether in life or death. Did you ever unexpectedly bump into something seemingly out of the way whether it was a cemetery or something else?
