Sleepy Hollow cemetery is located in the center of Concord, Massachusetts. It is Concord's largest and only public cemetery and was intended to reflect the mid- 19th century rural cemetery movement emphasis on naturalistic landscapes over traditional churchyards. Cleveland and Copeland designed it in 1855, and it has been used ever since. It is home to the Melvin Memorial, a monument commemorating the lives of three Melvin brothers who died in the U. S. Army serving in the Civil War. The cemetery also contains a hill called Author's Ridge, the final resting place for notable authors including Henry David Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Nathaniel Hawthorne as well as their families.
