Wisconsin: The Dells. The Wisconsin Dells area, located about 42 miles northwest of Madison, is widely considered the ultimate Midwest tourist trap, drawing millions of visitors yearly. While the "Waterpark Capital of the World" is packed with kitschy roadside attractions, it also boasts stunning natural sandstone gorges and premium mega-resorts that make it a beloved family destination. Wyoming: Wyoming Frontier Prison. Tours of the abandoned and crumbling Wyoming Frontier Prison in Rawlins, which opened in 1901 and closed in 1981, include viewing the Punishment Pole, where prisoners were whipped with rubber hoses, and the chance to sit in a real gas chamber. This historic site is listed on The National Register of Historic Places, and offers tours to approximately 15,000 visitors annually. Museum exhibits are free and can be explored at your own pace.
