Nature
Wombats are the only animals that produce cube-shaped feces, shaped by their uniquely structured intestines and used for communication. How Wombats Produce Cube-Shaped Poop Wombats have an unusually long intestine, about 10 meters (33 feet), which is much longer than their body length. The intestinal walls are not uniform: they contain segments that are stiffer and others with elastic grooves. As food passes through over several days, the fecal matter gradually dries and solidifies. In the final 8% of the intestine, the combination of varying elasticity and drying rates molds the feces into small, roughly 2-centimeter cubes with flat faces and sharp edges, despite the wombat having a round anus This process is aided by the wombat’s slow digestion, which allows nearly 40,000 wavelike contractions to shape the feces precisely
