If you've been keeping up on your Australian penguin gossip blogs (of course, you have!), then you already know about Sydney's hottest new celebrity couple, "Sphengic." Sphen and Magic (together, "Sphengic") are two male gentoo penguins living in captivity at the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium. They are young, in love and about to become co-parents, thanks to a foster egg that the aquarium has generously entrusted to the couple's care. It won't be the first time two male penguins became daddies in captivity. In 2000, two chinstrap penguins named Roy and Silo successfully hatched a foster egg in New York's Central Park Zoo. Their healthy baby, named Tango, even went on to become the star of a children's book, "And Tango Makes Three" Don't you think this teaches a very important lesson as to what constitutes good parents?

The debate over same-sex marriage frequently turns to concerns about the emotional well-being of children raised by same-sex parents. But science tells us the fears are overblown.Countless studies have shown that children raised by same-sex parents are not adversely affected by their upbringing, and some studies have even shown that they may even fare better. This may be due to the extreme measures same-sex parents often take to have children. These studies also refute the old "it takes both a mother and father" to raise a child, instead replacing it with a stable and loving home environment. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics supports all different kinds of parents that provide children with a stable home. Do you support same-sex parenting?

I have done several surveys on this subject in the past, and inevitably the comments turn to "it's against God's will" or it is "unnatural". Not much I can say to change someone's mind, despite all the studies being done. I would beg to differ that it is the quality of the two parents (or often even one), and not the gender, that makes a good parent. Of course, in the animal kingdom, same-sex couples and parenting is very common. Maybe some species of living creatures are just so much more involved? How many of these examples are you familiar with?

Among giraffes, there's more same-sex than opposite-sex activity. In fact, studies say gay sex accounts for more than 90 percent of all observed sexual activity in giraffes. And they don't just get straight to business. Male giraffes know how to flirt, first necking with each other - that is, gently rubbing their necks along the other's body. This foreplay can last for up to an hour.

Both female and male bottlenose dolphins display homosexual behavior, including oral action where one dolphin stimulates the other with its snout. In the bottlenose world, homosexual activity occurs with about the same frequency as heterosexual play. Male bottlenose dolphins are generally bisexual - but they do go through periods of being exclusively homosexual.

Homosexual activity between male bisons is more common than heterosexual copulation. That's because female bisons only mate with bulls about once a year. During mating season, males that get the urge engage in same-sex activities several times a day. And so, more than 50 percent of mounting in young bison males happens among the same gender.

The Layson albatross, which nests in Hawaii, is known for its large number of homosexual partnerships. Around 30 percent of pairings on the island of Oahu are made up of two females. They are monogamous, and usually stay together for life - as it takes two parents to successfully rear a chick together. The chicks are often fathered by males that are already in another committed relationship.

Like many birds, swans are monogamous and stick with one partner for years. Many of them choose a same-sex partner. In fact, around 20 percent of swan couples are homosexuals - and they often start families together. Sometimes, one swan in a male couple will mate with a female, and then drive her away once she's laid a clutch of eggs. In other cases, they adopt abandoned eggs.
