Results: Dumb Waiters (Part 3 of 4)
Published on 08/21/2025
This series is not about stupid servers, but rather, the small freight elevators or lifts used to carry food, laundry, or other items from one floor to another. Originally manually-powered with a rope and pulley system, most of today's dumb waiters are powered by electric motors developed in the 1920's.

In 1957 Harold Pinter published a one act play called, "The Dumb Waiter". Set in a dingy basement, 2 hired assassins banter and argue as they wait for their latest target to arrive. Investigating a sound from the wall, they see a dumb waiter bearing a piece of paper with a list of food on it. Papers continue to arrive with increasingly odd food requests they can't fill. The play ends with a confrontation. What's your connection to "The Dumb Waiter"?
