Christmas, actually any holiday really, will inevitably come with little problems and hiccups. All the planning in the world just will not prepare for you for that guest at dinner who is vegan, or your cousin's child who shows up, and you don't have a gift. Or will it? Here are just a few little helpful tips that can help your holiday go smoother, if not "perfect". Have you ever done any of these ideas?

Have a few wrapped gifts that would appeal to anyone -- even that picky aunt -- with blank tags on them, ready to personalize. Some great ideas include gift cards taped to a fancy box of chocolates, pretty set of unique mugs (who doesn't love these), set of fancy jams, honey or other food items and don;t forget the younger ones -- gift cards or a Lego set. If you don't need them, they can be returned (keep the bills) or used any time (gift cards)

When planning your dinner, think side dishes that are good for someone who may be vegetarian or vegan -- instead of the empty calories in mashed potatoes, think salads with avocado and beans, roasted okra, stuffed mushrooms, and roasted vegetable. Not only will any guests who don't eat animal protein thank you, it'll add variety to your dinner for everyone

To be able to enjoy yourself at holiday parties, and not put on extra pounds, allow yourself a few little treats, but fill up your plate with veggies and protein. If you're going out to a party and you know you'll be faced with delicious fattening foods, have a light, healthy meal just before you go. And drink lots of water before you go. Avoid the rich eggnog and fancy drinks -- stick to dry wine or mixed drinks with soda

Probably the most important thing you can do is get plenty of sleep and exercise. It will help you both stay healthy and ease stress during what is always a stressful season

Help! My cat will not stay away from our Christmas tree! -- Cats naturally hate the scent of oranges, so keep orange peels under the tree to repel your cat. If its a plastic tree, a small amount of Citronella oil shaken into a bottle of water and misted on to the tree makes it smell unpleasant to the cat but fresh and citrus-like to you.

Help! My brother/father-in-law/uncle bought my child a gift I do not allow (think toy gun, age-inappropriate gift, violent video game) -- Well-meaning family members might not realize your house rules about certain toys or items you prefer your kids not play with. Depending on your feelings, it's fine to simply thank the person and encourage your child to thank them. Remind them of your rules later, when you can have a conversation with them privately. After the party and gift exchange is over, explain to your child how much the gift is appreciated BUT you're going to return it or exchange it for a more appropriate toy. You could also donate the item.

Help! There is glitter everywhere in my house! Why do holiday wrap and bags always have to have glitter! -- Luckily, scotch tape works wonders with removing glitter! Use a lint-remover to pick up any glitzy spills. Keep a trash bag handy on Christmas morning and toss wrapping paper as you go. Remember it's all part of the Christmas fun!

Help! My grandmother just spilled wine on my carpet! -- It happens. If a spill occurs, keep hydrogen peroxide cleaner (like OxiClean) on hand in a spray bottle to spritz on stains. If your party is still in full swing, take the time to quietly blot—don't rub—as much of the red wine as you can right away using clean paper towels. Then, when the last guest leaves, take the time to fully remove the stain before it fully set.

For some of us, this time of year is very stressful and also a reminder of what we don't have, rather than what we have. If you are alone at this time of year, it can be very sad and lonely, at a time where everyone seems to be with family and friends. Here are a few tips for either the ones who are feeling the loneliness or others who see neighbors or work colleagues in situations like this. Have you ever done/had any of these done for you?
