The next-door neighbors created the absolute best Halloween display in the subdivision- including a small cemetery. Their four-year-old grandson was delighted to show me around. They did a swell job. But there are a few things not quite accurately portrayed.

Didn't say anything to the little guy, but there are some issues with the display. The graves are properly oriented east to west, but the heads are facing toward the setting sun. This is backwards. Did you know that the body should be placed so that it is facing the rising sun?

There is an "iron" fence along one and only one side of the little cemetery. While this is decorative, it will not keep the spirits from wandering. "Cold iron" is said to be able to contain fairies, ghosts, and other supernatural creatures. Of course, this has me wondering if little Cade's ghosts are going to pop up, stretch, and decide to head north toward our house since they aren't actually fenced in. Do you think we should be concerned?

Years ago, in some rural areas of the south, it was not uncommon to find a mirror by the door into a house. This was mean to trap spirits and keep them out of the home. Victorians sometimes covered the mirrors following a death so their loved one's spirit would not get trapped. This may not seem relevant to us today, but it does at least explain why that creepy guy is in the Magic Mirror Snow White's stepmother has in her room. Did not mention this to my pal, Cade- he's more into the Ninja Turtles than Snow White, anyway. Do you believe in ghosts?

As kids we were convinced that we had to hold our breath when driving past a cemetery. This of course, was to prevent our breathing in a spirit. Still catch myself doing this even today. (Definitely won't share this old superstition with young Cade!) Did hold your breath when passing a cemetery back when you were a kid?

My grown children have a long held superstitious belief that if we don't make a dessert called Ghosts in the Graveyard that Trick or Treat will get rained out. Completely devoid of any nutritional value whatsoever it's a mix of instant pudding, milk, artificial whipped topping, and crushed Oreo cookies. The mix is decorated with candy corn, whipped topping ghosts, and Milano cookies. Have you ever had this 90s Halloween part staple?
