Results: Eliminating the Competition
Published on 07/14/2025
The Cuban Women's Volleyball team was scheduled to compete in the NORCECA Women's Final Four in Puerto Rico later this month. The four teams scheduled to play were Mexico, Costa Rica, Cuba, and, you guessed it, Puerto Rico. The Cuban team has been denied visas to enter Puerto Rico/the United States, because of Donald Trump's new visa restrictions set in place last month.

The Cuban Women's Volleyball team won back-to-back world championships in 1994 and 1998. It also won Olympic gold medals in 1992, 1996, and 2000. They have been working hard to get ready for this Final Four tournament in Puerto Rico. Their win in this tournament would have awarded them ranking points toward future qualifications, which would have led eventually to the 2028 Summer Olympics. Now, they face the possibility they will not receive future qualifications because they are being denied entry into Puerto Rico. Do you think including these 12 women is Trump's visa restrictions is fair? Yes

Trump's visa restrictions apply to many more countries whose athletes compete in the Summer Olympics, the next ones of which are to be held in, tada, the United States, in 2028, while Trump will still likely be president. Before then, many Cuban athletes and athletes from other countries targeted by Trump will need to compete in international competitions, some in the United States, in order to qualify for the Olympics. Do you think this is one way of the United States eliminating competition its athletes might otherwise face? Yes
