The Queen was never really intended to be the Queen. She was actually third in line, behind her uncle, and her own father. When King George V died in 1936, Edward VIII took the throne—then renounced it less than a year later so that he could marry Wallis Simpson, a divorced American socialite. George VI produced no more children and died in 1952. His eldest daughter was crowned Queen Elizabeth II. How many other trivia facts about the Queen did you know?

Technically speaking, Queen Elizabeth is the Queen of Canada, as well as the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ceylon, and Pakistan, among others. Many feel that this is an unnecessary and outdated role, but in fact she still is the Sovereign of the parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy of Canada. She appoints a governor general who acts at the federal level and subsequently appoints one lieutenant governor in each of Canada's ten provinces. All ministers, legislators, members of the armed forces, public servants, and police officers swear allegiance to the Queen. Though the aforementioned court ruling is likely to be appealed, for the time being all new citizens swear allegiance to the Queen as well. All passports are likewise issued in the name of the Queen. Many feel this should change. Do you agree?
