Birds of a feather flock together. (The above survey title was written by William Turner in 1545). The reason for birds flocking is: Flocking also enables birds to fly further using less energy because when the strong leader bird flaps its wings it creates uplift for the birds behind – each bird (except the leader) is flying in the up-wash from the wing of the bird in front. This enables the flock to use less energy and reduces fatigue. Were you aware this?

While many people think most, if not all, birds fly south in the winter, all you have to do is take a look around to see that many of our feathered friends stick around through even the coldest months. Whether a particular type of bird flies south for the winter depends mainly on one thing: what type of food it eats. Have you ever flown south for the winter?

Apparently, Robins are the birds that chirp or sing at night. The main purpose of singing is to attract a mate and defend a territory. Robins are one of the few birds that hold a territory throughout the winter so continue to sing when the majority of other birds have stopped. Have you heard birds chirp in the middle of the night?

American Crows are familiar over much of the continent: large, intelligent, all-black birds with hoarse, cawing voices. They are common sights in treetops, fields, and roadsides, and in habitats ranging from open woods and empty beaches to town centers. They usually feed on the ground and eat almost anything – typically earthworms, insects and other small animals, seeds, and fruit but also garbage, carrion, and chicks they rob from nests. Their flight style is unique, a patient, methodical flapping that is rarely broken up with glides. American crows are plentiful in Burbank, and have the most annoying sounds. But they are funny to watch, especially when they have found a leftover burger on the ground. Are there black crows in your area?
