Candy Land, the simple racing board game was designed in 1948 by Eleanor Abbott, while she was recovering from polio in San Diego, California. The game was made for and tested by the children in the same wards in the hospital. Abbott hoped the game would take the children's minds off their illness, as well as keeping them occupied. The children suggested that Abbott submit the game to Milton Bradley Company. The game was bought by Milton Bradley and first published in 1949 as a temporary fill in for their then main product line, school supply. Candy Land quickly became Milton Bradley's best selling game. In 2005, the game was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. Have you ever played this game, and did you know how it originated?

Monopoly is without a doubt the most popular game worldwide. Over 250 million sets of Monopoly have been sold since its invention and the game has been played by over half a billion people. The history of Monopoly can be traced back to 1903, when American anti-monopolist Elizabeth Magie created a game through which she hoped to be able to explain the single tax theory of Henry George. It was intended as an educational tool to illustrate the negative aspects of concentrating land in private monopolies. Magie took out a patent in 1904. Her game, The Landlord's Game, was self-published, beginning in 1906. By 1933, a variation on The Landlord's Game called Monopoly was the basis of the board game as we know it. It was first sold by Parker Brothers beginning on February 6, 1935. Have you ever played Monopoly and did you know the origin?

Trivial Pursuit is a Canadian designed game, and while its origins do not date back as far as the other two games, its origins are fairly interesting. The game was created in December 1979 in Montreal, Quebec, by Chris Haney, a photo editor for Montreal's The Gazette, and Scott Abbott, a sports editor for The Canadian Press. After finding pieces of their Scrabble game missing, they decided to create their own game. With the help of two other friends, they completed development of the game, which was released in 1981, with artwork by 18-year-old artist Michael Wurstlin. This game quickly became a best seller, worldwide. Did you ever play this game and did you know the origins?
