October 16 was National Dictionary Day. This day was created in honor of Noah Webster's birthday (October 16, 1758) and was set aside as a day to emphasize the importance of learning and using dictionary skills and increasing one's vocabulary. Many people estimate that there are more than a million words in the English language. In fact, during a project looking at words in digitized books, researchers from Harvard University and Google estimated a total of 1,022,000 words and that the number would grow by several thousand each year. When you see a massive number like this, though, it's important to remember that this includes different forms of the same word. It also includes lots of words that we could call archaic (they are not used in modern English). Do you actually own a dictionary?

Since I am Canadian, I am going to list some of the words or phrases unique to my country, but feel free to add your own in the comments. This question is for the Americans: did you know what these words meant before you saw this list?
