The odds of being born on February 29th are 1 in 1,461, or .068 per cent. That makes them a real minority, with only about five million Leaplings in the whole world. In the US, the number is just 187,000.

Being born on Leap Day is actually rarer than being born with 11 fingers and toes (odds are 1 in 500).

Most countries and territories tend to recognize that a Leap Day baby has legally 'aged' on March 1 of non-Leap Years, including the U.S., Canada, Wales, England Hong Kong. Only some states have statues that say which date should be used. For those that don't, the default is March 1. For those that do, it is typically to signify that it is February 28. New Zealand also uses February 28, as does Taiwan.

Rapper Ja Rule was born on Leap Day, as were Antonio Sabàto Jr., Law & Order: SVU actor Peter Scanavino, The Godfather actor Alex Rocco, rapper Saul Williams, Get Shorty actor Dennis Farina, composer Gioacchino Rossini, jazz musician Jimmy Dorsey, British football player Darren Ambrose, and Foster the People musician Mark Foster.

Perhaps the most famous name with a February 29 birthday isn't even real — though it makes sense that he'd be born on such a special day: Superman

Sir James Milne Wilson was the Premier of Tasmania from 1869 to 1872. The British ruler was born on February 29, 1812 and died on February 29, 1880, making him one of the only known people to have been born on and die on a Leap Day. One might call him a Gold Star Leapling.

Having one child born on Leap Day is unique enough, but a family in Norway managed to welcome three children on different Leap Days, each four years after the former. Karin and Henry Henriksen had three kids, and each defied the odds. Heidi, the eldest, was born on February 29, 1960. Olav, the next, was born February 29, 1964. And Leif-Martin, the youngest, was born February 29, 1968.

A Utah family also has three kids born on Leap Day. Louise Estes welcomed Xavier born in 2004, Remington in 2008, and Jade in 2002, all born February 29.

Michelle Birnbaum from Saddle River, New Jersey was born on February 29, 1980, making her another rare Leap Baby. In 2008, at age 28 — to the day — she gave birth to a daughter named Rose. Not only do they share the same birthday, but they also share Leapling status.

Two generations of Leaplings is unlikely — but three is an almost impossible event. Peter Anthony Keogh, his son Eric, and his granddaughter Bethany were all born on Leap Day. Grandpa Peter was born in Ireland 1940, Eric in 1964, and Bethany in 1996.

Leaplings can find each other by joining the Honor Society of Leap Year Day Babies. Founded in 1997, it's currently over 10,000 members strong. On Facebook, they have over 800 members.

In 2016, Daisy Belle Ward turned 100 on February 29, and had a big party for her 25th birthday. The fete was an all-white gala that included an 80-piece marching band, recognition by local city officials, gospel music by recording artist Dottie Peoples, and a Centennial Certificate issued by President Barack Obama.

The Pirates of Penzance -- February 29th plays an important role in this Gilbert and Sullivan comedy opera, in which Frederic, whose apprenticeship with the titular band of pirates can only end after his 21st birthday, realizes that his birthday falls on Leap Day and he must serve for 63 more years.

La Bougie du Sapeur -- In France, you can buy a new issue of the satirical newspaper La Bougie du Sapeur every four years on Leap Day

February 29 -- The South Korean horror film February 29, is about a series of supernatural murders that occur at a haunted tollbooth every four years

Google -- Google uses frogs every Leap Day for their doodle, because they leap.

Parks and Recreation -- In one episode of Parks and Recreation, we learned that Jerry's birthday falls on a Leap Day, and Leslie decides to throw him a surprise sweet 16.

Modern Family and The Middle -- Modern Family's Cameron Tucker and Sue Heck from The Middle celebrate birthdays on February 29th.

30 Rock -- No show went more Leap Day-crazy than 30 Rock, which tried to turn February 29th into a legitimate holiday by giving it an apparently benevolent grandfatherly mascot called Leap Day William
