Results: The Bunny Whisperer

This adorable video shows a British Columbia man coaxing a nest of bunnies out from their hiding place. The "bunny whisperer" is getting a lot of attention, but this also comes as a reminder that at this time of year, when cleaning up your yard, be mindful of "dead" looking grass. That patch of brown on your lawn might be more than dead grass. If you peel it back you might find a little nest of baby rabbits, squirming just under the surface. Lawn full of dandelions? Even though your first inclination may be to mow them down, or pull them out, maybe think twice. Dandelions actually provide early spring food for many birds and insects, including bees. Bumblebees, solitary bees and honeybees all visit dandelions for food, along with hoverflies, beetles, and butterflies such as the peacock and holly blue. Goldfinches and house sparrows eat the seed. So, perhaps wait until June when these insects and birds can find other food sources. Do you think you will let your dandelions grow, at least for a while?
