Results: Ever been the victim of a misunderstanding that got worse and worse....?

FYI - I'm a hard of hearing male. I lost my hearing when I was 5. Missed a LOT of the social cues other people take for granted. Figured things out by reading a lot. I was walking in the mall, passed a kiosk selling t-shirts. One read, "Can I pet your beaver?" ....and being a Canadian, I immediately thought it was a joke about Canadians owning pet beavers. It's actually a slang term for a woman's vagina. Sigh. I found out when our national magazine, "The Beaver" had to change its name and the reason why was reported on the front page of the local newspaper.

I got sick when I was 5 and was in the hospital minus my hearing back in 1978 or so. So, I'm 5. I can't hear anymore and I don't know how to read. Someone found a Transformers comic book and I feel in love. Giant robots that transformed into cars, trucks, airplanes, etc? Awesome....but being 5 I totally missed the fact that the stories were made-up and fictional. I went through ages 5 to 10 or so thinking they were factual. Especially once I got a hearing aid and became part cyborg. Part of the problem was that back then, hearing aids amplified mechanical noises more than human ones so I could "hear" the cars "talking" to each other. Couldn't understand them, but boy, could I ever hear them.... Yes, I have had a similar experience. I thought X was factual when it was fictional.
