Results: Urban Legends of the United States. Part 2 of 12.
Published on 12/30/2024
Unlike traditional folk tales, which are generally associated with rural preliterate societies or with stories told by the very old to the very young, urban legends are shared and believed by people of all ages, classes, professions, and education levels. Every state has their own tall tales. The Travel Channel is my source for this series.

The Gold Brook Covered Bridge, located in Stowe, Vermont, is locally known as "Emily's Bridge." It is said that Emily died of heartbreak after being jilted by her lover and now haunts this bridge. The legend says that if you stop on the bridge, Emily may scratch your car, or you may hear dragging across the roof of your vehicle. Would you like to visit this charming, covered bridge alone?

Don't get skinned by the Bunny Man near Clifton, Virginia. Legend has it that a crashed transport van from a shuttered mental asylum killed most of the inmates. Not long after, dead rabbits began appearing in the trees. Authorities finally found an inmate living in the woods. As they chased the inmate to capture him, he was struck by a train. The bunny man can reportedly be seen on the train bridge where he died. Have you ever traveled by train?

Beware the Skinwalker Ranch near Ballard, Utah. Beyond the skinwalker (A malevolent witch from Navajo folklore that can transform into, possess, or disguise themselves as an animal.) sightings, the area is prone to large amounts of UFO sightings. Some people believe that skinwalkers are actually extraterrestrials. Do you believe in extraterrestrials?

Martha's Chapel, a church community also known as Robinson's Settlement, was seven miles southwest of Huntsville, Texas. There is a cemetery in the middle of what was the settlement. Claims of mysterious voices and shadow people have been made about the cemetery along with spirit hands coming out of the ground to grab unexpected passers-by. Locals warn curious people who desire to brave the graveyard not to provoke the spirits. Many claim that if you do be prepared to have a spirit follow you home after being in the cemetery. Does this sound like a must-see destination for your next vacation?
