Red sprites are rare discharges over thunderstorms that last lest than a second. They are a cold plasma phenomenon rather than lightning. Have you heard of/seen red sprites?

Blue jets also occur over thunderstorms. While not necessarily associated with lightning, they do have some connection to hail activity. They appear as blue cones that travel out and above from the cloud. Have you heard of/seen blue jets?
