I would like to think I am not influenced into buying something I didn't already want but my history (not recent) is littered with bad choices in fashion, clothing, hair styles, substance use, alcoholic drink types etc. I have bought stuff that was too long, too short, too tight, too colourful or just plain silly. How can I explain the suit with no collar (The Beatles), the canary yellow tight pants (The Bee Gees) the mutton chop sideburns (Mungo Jerry) weed smoking (Peter Fonda). How about you? Which of the following have you been influenced to buy or use?

Back in the days when I watched cable TV, I was prone to make strange buying decisions or potentially hazardous ones based on ads I saw on network TV or even The Home Shopping Network. Some were legitimate products that did what was advertised for about an hour then broke. Few of them lived up to the excitement and hype. Some were only worth one of the "three easy payments" I signed up for. Do you remember The K-Tel Patty Stacker, The Pocket Fisherman, The Flowbee (haircut), Spray-on hair pioneered by Ronco in the 1980s and still around today. Have you ever bought one of these "As Seen on TV" products?

What is the worst purchase you have ever made?
  • Aftershave that was "a copy" of a brand name that smelled like paint remover but removed skin just as well.
  • 1984 Chevrolet truck with a 400 big block engine
  • A Chrysler new Yorker. Huge lemon!!!
