Results: The Small Business Basics

After learning about food deserts and identifying several in my new community, I came up with what I feel is an innovative way to combat the problem. I was particularly happy with my idea because it could be turned into a small business venture while also benefiting the community in multiple ways. Have you ever had a business idea from an unexpected source?

Like most people with a small business idea, I knew I would have to deal with start up funding. I looked into small business grants and found on the federal site "the federal government does not currently offer grants to start or expand small businesses". However, there are limited grants available at the federal level if the business "benefits certain businesses or industries or mankind". Were you aware of the strict limitations for federal small business grants?

One way to tackle this issue of funding is to switch to a non-profit, as it is much easier to obtain grants on any level for a non-profit than it is for a "for-profit" business. Would you be willing to switch to a non-profit business model to increase the likelihood of grant funding for your start-up or expansion?
