When the New Horizon Mall near Calgary, Alberta, opened, retail units were sold privately to buyers, much like selling a condo. The developer sold 99 per cent of them. The problem is, no stores moved in. Now, just before the busy holiday shopping season unofficially starts, one big problem for shoppers won't be finding a parking spot. The 320,000-square-foot, Asian-inspired mall boasting more than 500 units was eerily empty, with only 11 stores opened as of the first of October. Things look a bit more promising for this month, with New Horizon now offering owners a $5,000 incentive to open and lease their units before Dec. 31, 2018. The mall is also trying to attract cultural events and festivals to bring people through the doors and onto its entertainment stage at the centre of the mall. The grand opening, which was scheduled for this fall, has been moved to sometime in 2019, when it can be actually hopefully somewhat "grand". Have you ever gone to a mall that was a virtual "ghost mall"?

"Ghost malls" or "dead malls" are located all over Canada and the States, sadly a sign of our changing economic climate. Online shopping, big box stores, the decline of the "anchor" department stores and more unique shopping destinations are all responsible for the traditional mall losing business after business, with some closing down all together. Have you ever been to any of these "ghost malls" when they were deserted?
The Rolling Acres Mall in Akron, Ohio opened in 1975 and expanded several times throughout its history. At one point, it had more than 140 stores. On Dec. 31, 2013, the mall's last retail store closed, and it was demolished in 2017.

The Hawthorne Plaza Mall was opened in 1977 in partial hopes to revive the city of Hawthorne, California. At one point, it had 134 stores, but during the '90s the mall went into decline. By 1999, it had closed. The mall is featured in 2001's Evolution and 2002's Minority Report. It has since been demolished to make way for new retail spaces.

The Cloveleaf Mall in Chesterfield, Va., opened in 1972 with 40 shops anchored by J.C. Penney and Sears. The mall was a popular hangout for families in the '70s and '80s, but according to the Chesterfield Observer, "That all changed in the 1990s. when people started avoiding the mall, which they felt had become a "gang" hangout. Stores stopped renewing their leases and in 2007 it closed permanently, and demolished in 2011.

Crestwood Mall in St. Louis opened in 1956 and stayed open for more than 55 years. At one point, it had over 90 stores and 4 anchor stores. Like many longtime indoor malls across the country, it is changing because of age, location, new ways of shopping, and increased competition from newer shopping centers and the Internet. The mall was also inconvenient to get to because it wasn't close to an interstate exit. It closed in 2013, and demolished shortly after.

The Charlestowne Mall in St. Charles, Ill. actually has only two of its anchors — Von Maur, and Classic Cinemas — still open for business, but the interior closed in December of 2017. There are plans to redevelop the property for a combination of residential, retail and commercial use.

The opening of Century III Mall in West Mifflin, Pa., in 1979 marked the end of a decade-long project to build a 1.6 million-square-foot retail hub that was, at the time of its completion, the third-largest enclosed mall in the world. However, the mall — named for the U.S. bicentennial in 1976 (the nation was entering its third century) — now has just 11 stores operating on its premises, with its escalators shut down and food court roped off
