While many of us in Canada, and the U.S. are getting snow this weekend -- we in southern Ontario are due to get 15 to 20 cm (6" to 8") of snow today -- when it comes to wild, winter weather, Newfoundland, Canada, again, takes the prize. A large section of the island — including the city of St. John's — is under a blizzard warning Saturday with a total snowfall of 75 centimetres ( 30") expected. Add the already 170 cm (67") of snow on the ground before this storm, the storm surges, and winds up to 110 km an hour (70 miles an hour) to the blowing snow, with drifts covering cars and roofs and you have the "perfect storm". It even triggered a rare state of emergency in St. John's — a place used to whopper snowstorms. Businesses have been closed, transit taken off the road, and residents have been told to stay home. Even snow plows had been taken off the road in the thick of the storm. Have you ever experienced a winter storm of this magnitude?

A search has been launched for a young man missing in a rural area near Newfoundland's Conception Bay, who went into the woods Friday as the blizzard was ramping up and has what his family describes as "health issues." The search is difficult because the snow drifts are up to the searchers' shoulders, in some cases. The young man went to visit a friend, but never arrived. He last sent his friend his location through his cell phone, and said he was lost, but it is believed the battery died right after that. Have you ever walked or driven through some terrible weather conditions that you lost your bearings?

With a storm of this magnitude, elderly people on their own is always a big concern, due to both the volume of snow, high winds and potential power outages. The public was told to make sure they check on any elderly neighbours to make sure they were safe. If you have ever experienced a big storm, with adverse conditions, did you check on elderly neighbours to make sure they are safe?

Staff with Rainbow Riders, a therapeutic horse program in St. John's, spent two nights inside the facility to wait out the massive blizzard, just in case they were not able to get in when the storm hit. The staff made sure they had stockpiled plenty of "storm carrots", and both staff and horses safely waited out the storm. When a big storm hits, do you find it heartwarming to hear stories such as this?
