Hamas executed a complex, multifront assault on October 7, 2023—the kind of coordinated attack that takes months to plan. So how could Israeli intelligence services—among the best in the world—be caught by surprise?

Israeli leaders have publicly acknowledged that they were surprised by the Hamas attack, but they have also brushed away questions about intelligence failures.

How could Shin Bet, Mossad, and the Israel Defense Forces not know of an impending attack? Despite Israel's reputation for having some of the world's best intelligence services, they were caught off guard by the attack?

The U.S. Intelligence Community knew plotting was ongoing, but their warnings went unheeded for unclear reasons. It remains unknown why the warnings from Egypt were also ignored. We may never know why Israel failed to protect itself from the October 7 terrorist attack.

The Israeli military intelligence is known for monitoring Palestinian terrorist groups through various means, including SIGINT, IMINT, and HUMINT. They excel in computer network operations, which have caused significant controversy. Despite their capabilities, it is still not known why they missed the signs of an impending attack. Did Israel know Hamas would attack?
