Opponents of the bill argue that requiring a religious text in all classrooms would violate the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which states that Congress can "make no law respecting an establishment of religion." Civil liberties groups swiftly vowed to challenge the law in court. This law makes Louisiana the first state to require the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every classroom that receives state funding.
