In 1961, Tommy Douglas introduced Canada's first publicly funded medical insurance system provincially, during his time as premier of Saskatchewan. This was later implemented federally by Lester B Pearson in 1966 and is the healthcare system used by Canada today. Tommy Douglas was the leader of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and later the NDP (which was a merger between the CCF and the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC).
