McCarthy was voted out as speaker when a small band of eight hardline conservative Republicans joined all Democrats to approve a "motion to vacate" introduced by GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz, of Florida. The final vote was 216-210. Gaetz said McCarthy no longer represents the interests of the Republican caucus after he worked with Democrats to pass a stopgap funding bill to avoid a government shutdown. On the Democrat side, they allegedly felt betrayed by McCarthy's U-turn in the days after the storming of the Capitol, when he first condemned Donald Trump's role in it and then backed him.
