Results: House GOP may try again after Jordan fails first ballot

The House will likely take at least another vote Tuesday on Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan's bid to become speaker.

Twenty Republicans voted against Jordan for the gavel earlier in the afternoon. And some lawmakers have said they expect Jordan (R-Ohio) to lose support on the second try. Many of Jordan's foes are moderates and appropriators — including GOP Reps. Mike Simpson of Idaho and Kay Granger of Texas — worried about the House GOP Conference being led by a member of the far right.

Russell Dye, a Jordan spokesperson, told reporters, "The House needs a speaker as soon as possible. Expect another round of votes today. It’s time for Republicans to come together." The ongoing impasse is elevating talk from some Republicans about empowering acting Speaker Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) to conduct some legislative business.

A handful of Democrats is also considering the idea under certain conditions. But it's unclear how much traction it would have once presented to the full House.
