Results: This is about the carrot or stick approach to climate change. We can do the right thing because, as good citizens, it makes sense or we can do the right thing as obedient citizens because it is the law and we might be caught and punished. Our choice.

I tend to obey the law, even laws I don't really believe in. For example, I obey the speed limit even when traffic is light and the speed limit is low. I have an app on my phone from my auto insurer that monitors my driving speed, smoothness and focus and gives me a 14% discount as a good driver. This is the carrot approach. The local police department has stealth cars hiding behind bushes with photo radar even when traffic is light and the speed limit is low. This is the stick approach. I accept one and resent the other. I feel the same way about climate change.

While many of us reduce our carbon footprint because it makes sense economically as well as for other reasons, governments are adopting a big stick approach to force some of their measures on us even if it doesn't make sense. Do we not have the right to make these decisions without government coercion? Which of the following measures do you think are necessary, justified and/or acceptable?

What impact do you think these government proposals will have on our cost of living?
  • They will up the cost of everything - we will have to stay home - that will help the planet.
  • It will drive the cost of living up just like every other policy from the Biden Administrations.
  • They'll skyrocket even higher, and lest they forget, why do they think they have complete power over us and our will...we elect/impeach them...right?!!!

Our governments have signed accords that have created arbitrary deadlines for certain climate goals and the pressure to meet those goals is being passed down to ordinary citizens. At the dawn of the last century we switched from horses to automobiles without such pressures by allowing market forces to adapt and adopt technology. Here are some setbacks to our current climate strategy, mainly caused by the rush to meet deadlines. Which of them should be allowed more time and less government interference to produce a better product.

Almost all EV manufacturers are having difficulty selling inventory. The demand for EVs is nowhere near as big as the supply given the price to buy one and the current cost of the power to fuel them. They are also proving to be as impractical and unreliable as predicted. Banning gas powered vehicles won't fix this. https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/ev-inventories-hit-record-high-in-us-as-cars-pile-up-on-dealer-lots-1.2011841

I think we need more encouragement to reduce our carbon footprint, rather than pressure to change our way of life to meet goals set by politicians without a mandate from us to support this agenda. Some 85,000 participants attended COP28 in December 2023 to share ideas, solutions, and build partnerships and coalitions. Almost all of them flew there. https://unfccc.int/news/cop28-agreement-signals-beginning-of-the-end-of-the-fossil-fuel-era These types of meetings should be virtual or not at all. Do you agree?
