Results: This is a survey about the death penalty. Canada doesn't have it. The US has it in some states but not in others. Shouldn't it be in all states or not at all? Why should it matter where you kill someone?

Idaho recently had to halt a planned execution after 8 failed attempts to insert an IV line to carry out the lethal injection. This case raised several issues that I thought were worthy of further discussion.
1.
1.
Three medical team members tried eight times to establish an IV. In some cases, they couldn't access the vein, and in others they could but had concerns about vein quality. They attempted sites in his arms, legs, hands and feet. This raised some issues. Which of them do you agree with.

After 8 unsuccessful attempts to start an IV, additional attempts might be classed as "cruel and unusual punishment" prompting the cancellation of the execution.

The prisoner been in prison for half a century, convicted of five murders in three states and suspected of several more. He was already serving a life term when he beat a fellow inmate to death in 1981 — the crime for which he was to be executed. Which of the following do you agree with?

Since he had already been convicted of 5 previous murders and added an additional one while in prison, the right to appeal the 6th one should have been disallowed and the execution carried out in 1981 or as soon as possible after the event.

If there are enough legal arguments to delay the punishment from 1981 until 2024, there can no longer be a fair trial and the death sentence should be rescinded.

The death sentence is applied haphazardly from one state to another:. It is inconsistently applied to similar crimes and criminals. It is biased based on racial prejudice, the financial status of the accused, media exposure, the whims of the judge and jury and other factors. As a result, the death penalty should be declared unconstitutional since all citizens are supposed to be equal before the law and they obviously are not..

The warden announced he was halting the execution The corrections department then said its death warrant would expire. There should not be a warrant with an expiry time since this merely encourages even more delaying tactics.

Finding a vein for an IV is something ordinary citizens often have to put up with so the solution should be to find a better qualified IV technician rather than using poorly trained prison staff.

Attorneys filed late appeals hoping to stop the execution including about how the state obtained the lethal drug and how it was to be administered. Since these methods are well established there is no burden of proof to justify further delay.

The convict has spent most of his life behind bars, convicted of a 1974 killing in Oregon, one in California, another two people who picked him and his girlfriend up while they were hitchhiking. While serving a life sentence for those murders, in 1981 he beat a young disabled person to death (who was serving time for car theft) leaving behind his 4 year old daughter. He doesn't deserve any further consideration and should have been executed years ago.

The criminal has supporters who say he is a changed man. He married the mother of a correctional officer and former prison staffers said he writes poetry and expresses gratitude for their work. However while the Deputy Prosecuting Attorney did not dispute that he can be charming, she said he is a psychopath — lacking remorse and empathy (not a medical diagnosis). Given this information, should this change the sentence?
