The distribution of calls was done by operators (almost always women) who were in charge of connecting the network plugs to the corresponding sockets. In this way, the person making the telephone call was actually contacting the switchboard first, which plugged the plug into the socket corresponding to the person receiving the call. By 1919 companies like the American Bell Company began to roll out national service for rotary dial telephones. Their golden age was about to begin. If you have never seen one, each rotary phone had a prominent disc, or dial, on the front. They could either be made from plastic or metal or any combination of the two. While designs did vary, most were around 7.5 cm in diameter with a total of ten holes around the inside edge of the dial. These holes needed to be large enough for a user's fingertip to be inserted. Each of the holes corresponds to a number, and in some cases letters. Have you ever owned a Rotary Dial Phone?

In the 1960s and 1970s, push button tone dial phones were introduced for the first time. Early models even used the same rotary dial signaling on the PABX but used buttons as the input. This was first introduced in the early 1960s and the 1962 Seattle World's Fair under the trade name "Touch-Tone." By the 1980s most rotary phones were being phased out in favor of this new upstart. The touch tone phone was completely electronic, with no relays or switches. It was computer controlled. It had precise tones. It had an amazing variety of custom calling features. It used tone ringers inside the phones. All of this was very innovative. Do you remember The Seattle World's Fair?

Telecommunications leaped forward with the first direct-dial phone call—made in New jersey, On November 10, 1951, Denning picked up the receiver of his black rotary phone and dialed 10 digits. Listening in at his side were nine men in suits from AT&T and Bell Labs. Three time zones and about 3,000 miles away, Frank Osborne, mayor of Alameda, California, picked up his ringing phone. A test of technology had been passed. The call was processed without an Operator! Do you remember.....
