History
Every generation goes through periods of change because of technology, politics, citizen movements, cultural developments etc.. Here are some more that happened during the Boomer generation. Some I miss, some not so much and some I just took for granted until one day they were gone..

At one time, it we wanted to phone someone, or find out their address, or find out what businesses sold a particular product in our town, we had to look through a thick volume called a Telephone Directory or in the case of a business, The Yellow Pages. These huge books arrived once per year and the old ones were thrown out before recycling systems eliminated all this waste. Salespeople could find you in these books and make "cold calls" to try to sell you something unless you "unlisted" yourself from these phone books. As computers and the Internet took over these functions the books started to grow thinner each year until one year the new ones didn't arrive. Do you miss the phone book and/or Yellow Pages?

It is hard to imagine there was a time when people thought smoking cigarettes in hospitals, eating establishments, planes, trains and automobiles was acceptable regardless of whether there were children, non smokers, people with medical conditions or staff around. Cigarette machines were everywhere, including at McDonald's as well as those nasty, smelly ashtrays and yellow tinged walls. People lit up a cigarette before a meal, during a meal and after a meal. Some people lit a cigarette before they were out of bed in the morning. They still show people smoking in TV shows and in movies. I think this spoils the show. Do you agree? Comments please.

Traveling on vacation or business used to involve buying Travellers Checks in order to avoid carrying cash (before ATMs were everywhere). I hated using them because my signatures were not always the same (they had to match). ID was supposedly not required to cash them but the reality was different and I always had to carry my passport as well as the checks (hard to fit into a Speedo). The last time I used them was on a visit to Mexico in 2008 and I found the banking system there made using ATMs and plastic much easier. Have you ever used Traveller's Checks?

Various types of typewriters came and went during my 50 years of career life and I used one maybe twice because I always had someone to type for me (a steno from the typing pool). The sound of a typewriter was a feature of every office and that "music" changed over the years. Today you rarely even hear a phone ring and the noise of typing is provided by long nails clicking on plastic keyboards. Have you ever used a typewriter (and if so what type was it)?
