World War II- Part 26-(1940) Italian involvement in Battle of Britain. The Italian involvement in the Battle of Britain started on September 10,1940 when Italian Airforce arrived in Nazi-occupied Melsbroek, Belgium to launch raids on Britain. Italian raids on Britain were not very successful due to British radar. British civilians noted a different sound from enemy bombers sounding like "tin cans" from the Italian bombers. On November 11, 1940, Italians would attack during their second and last day time raid on Harwick, England. Radar picked up the bombers and RAF dispatched Hurricanes from the 17 and 257 Squadrons with the Hurricanes from the 46 Squadron ordered to intercept while out on their patrol. This event would be dubbed the " The Spaghetti Party", as Hurricanes destroyed countless Italian bombers. One RAF pilot, Flight Lieutenant Howard Peter Blatchford was the first to engage the Italians attacking them until he ran out of ammunition and rammed the upper wing of a Italian C.R.42 plane with his propeller before safely returning to base missing 6" from his propeller with blood stains present from his opponent on it. This particular battle resulted in no lost RAF planes, although the Italians lied to Rome telling them they downed 9 British Hurricanes. Do you believe that Italy should not have even participated in the Battle of Britain cause they got their arses kicked?
