Actress Selma Blair found out she had multiple sclerosis, after years of suffering with undiagnosed symptoms. The Michigan native rose to fame starring in hit movies, including Cruel Intentions, Legally Blonde and After. Selma decided to be very public about her difficult health journey with MS and its impact on her mobility, whether that meant talking about it on a large media platform or even taking the stage with a cane to present at the 2022 Emmy Awards. Even her service dog has become a well-known aspect of her life. Selma initially shared that she had symptoms for at least five years before her official diagnosis, but thought she was just suffering from a pinched nerve. MS is a disease of the central nervous system, and believed to be an autoimmune condition, in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath that normally protects nerve fibers in the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerve. As the myelin sheath is gradually destroyed, the resulting scar tissue (sclerosis) disrupts the electrical impulses between the brain and other parts of the body.
