The actor sadly developed an addiction to drugs. On October 30, 1993, River consumed a lethal drink containing dissolved drugs and became unconscious outside the Viper Room nightclub on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. He died at 23 years old. The Viper Room lost some of its luster after the tragedy, and there have been talks in recent years that the building would soon face demolition.
