Who would have predicted this...in a movie summer full of incredible blockbuster films (The Incredibles 2, Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2 , Mission: Impossible, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), a romantic comedy has proven to be the most talked about movie this summer, and it's still going strong. Crazy Rich Asians has been packing theaters since it debuted topping $20 million its opening week. And three weeks later, it continues to break box-office records. In its second weekend, the box-office numbers only dropped a rare 6%. For context, The Incredibles 2, the biggest movie of the summer, saw a 56% drop in box-office turnout its second weekend. Crazy Rich Asians had the biggest Labor Day weekend box office in 11 years. This translates into three things: a sequel is guaranteed (there are three books in the series), more movies featuring Asian casts will be filmed and Singapore is definitely going to a "must see" location this year. Did you see this movie?

The gorgeous Singapore shots are only part of the appeal. This film just makes you happy to be alive. The story is universal -- girl meets boy, boy turns out to be RICH, boy takes girl to meet the family. The entire cast is Asian, but the story transcends this. The cast, however, is what endears this film to so many viewers. Have you seen any of the cast before (if you have not seen the movie, you still may know the cast)?

Another movie opened up last weekend at the box office, featuring a father and daughter who just happen to be Asian, although it is not pertinent to the role at all. It could have been cast with anyone, but Searching, the feature film directorial debut for Aneesh Chaganty (who also wrote the screenplay) chose to cast John Cho and Michelle La as father and daughter. In fact, Chaganty left his job at Google to make Searching, and the movie is shot entirely through the point of view of screens -- laptops, online searches, TV, security footage, GPS footage, texts, iMessages, etc. This film is a masterpiece in film making (and I am not exaggerating). I actually thought it would be confusing and boring, but I was completely wrong. I would suggest going to see it if you enjoy unique and well-done film making. Have you seen this film?
