As some here know, I lost my voice roughly five years back due to vocal cord cancer. Thought it would be interesting to look into some characters in film who can't speak or simply choose not to.

Edward Scissorhands - Played by Johnny Depp, Edward can speak, but does so rarely. Despite his looks and silence, he comes off more sympathetic than creepy. Ever known someone who doesn't have the use of their hands or prosthetic ones?

Elisa Esposito - In 'The Shape of Water', Sally Hawkins plays Elisa, whose vocal cords were damaged as a baby. She works as a night shift cleaner in a secret government lab where she meets an amazing creature. Do you personally know anyone who can't speak?

Oddjob - In the James Bond film 'Goldfinger', Olympic weightlifter Harold Sakata plays Goldfinger's bodyguard / butler. Can crush golf balls in his hand and has a razor-rimmed that can sever statue heads. Ever play a round of golf with a caddy as opposed to a golf cart or carrying the clubs yourself?

Nova- Played by Linda Harrison, Nova appears in both the film and book it's based on. Set in a world where apes can speak and humans mute primitives, she befriends Taylor (Charlton Heston). She does speak one word in the sequel, Taylor's name. Do you think it's actually possible for people to 'de-evolve'?
