Billy Wilder became, by his own admission, a director in an effort to protect his scripts from Directors who he felt misinterpreted his work. Wilder operated with confidence across all genres, compiling an impressive body of work featuring dialogue over character - its wit and astringent bite setting his body of work refreshingly apart from mainstream Hollywood fare.

The Major and the Minor tells the story of a New York working girl Susan Applegate desperate to go home to Iowa. She does not have the railway fare so she disguises herself as a child to ride half fare. Enroute she meets Philip Kirby, an Army major teaching at a military school. Lucky for her he has vision problems. The role was very close to Ginger Rogers' heart. When she was touring America with her vaudeville act and chauffeured by her mother, Lela E. Rogers, they could not afford to pay the full fare. Ginger had to pretend to be younger by rolling her stockings down and holding her old dolly to look like a young child in order to get a cheaper fare. Ginger Rogers Won The National Board of Review USA Best Acting Award for her role. Have you seen The Major and the Minor?
