While make-up in the film and TV industry is nothing new to change an actors appearance, in more recent times, I've seen cases of using CGI to change an actors age or even bringing them back to 'life'. Let's delve into a few.

Lawrence Olivier - first time I noticed this was 2004's Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Olivier had been dead 13 years at that point yet 'played' Dr. Totenkopf, a mysterious mad scientist thru computer tweaking of footage and audio from when he was a young actor. All that aside, do you think hologram type images will be common in communication of the future?

Yes - maybe not in my time, but at some point.

No - is the stuff of sci-fi movies and shows.

Peter Cushing - Cushing died in 1994, yet for the 2016 Star Wars movie Rogue One was 'brought back' to play Tarkin, head of the Death Star project. In this case, a life-mask from a horror film he'd been in allowed for a 3D scan of his face. This was used along with bits of unused footage and dialog from the original Star Wars. Guy Henry was the body stand-in. What's your thoughts of bringing dead actors 'back' through digital technology?
I have no problems with it as long as the decedents of the deceased actor grant permission and have say over how their image is used.

Seems a bit Frankenstein to me, permission or no. Could possibly create a whole film with actors no longer around.

Somewhere on the fence about this.

Mark Hamill - while Hamill is still alive, for the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandolorian, he was de-aged to appear as he was in the 80's using AI to select expressions and dialog from existing footage of him as Luke. This was digitally composited and tweaked for the show. Both Hamill and a body-double were used with the altered younger face. If you've seen a movie or show where a person was de-aged or brought back through CGI, did you find it convincing?
Yes- Even though I knew the person was older or dead, didn't really cross my mind and got wrapped up in the 'performance'.

No - Something seemed off-kilter, or knew this had to be faked, so took me out of the story.

Harrison Ford / Mads Mikkelsen - in the 2023 Indiana Jones film The Dial of Destiny, Ford and Mikkelsen also went through a similar de-aging process for opening scenes set in 1944, twenty five years prior to the main events of the story. Once again, AI software looked through footage of this pair in their younger days from previous work, again tweaked via computer. Ford was said to be impressed, yet somewhat spooked by the outcome. While most have seen photos of themselves from their early days, would it freak you out a bit to see a filmed recreation of yourself when young?
