Thought to be the last play William Shakespeare wrote, it was published between 1610-1611. It's one of my favorite tales of his with a bit of everything - adventure, romance, intrigue, comedy, fantasy. Below are three adaptions of this, each I find good in it's own way. "We are such stuff as dreams are made on..."

For those not familiar, The Tempest concerns Prospero, in exile on an island with his teenaged daughter Ariel. We learn 16 years before, he was the Duke of Milan before being usurped by his brother Antonio. When a ship carrying Antonio and his passengers come near, Prospero conjures a storm that strands them on the island and matters play out from there. Ever read or watched some version of The Tempest?

In 2011, Julie Taymor directed her version of The Tempest. Best known for the stage musical version of the Lion King, she's also helmed various films with her unique visual style. In this case, Helen Mirren is the lead as Prospera, which gives a new twist. How much do you care about switching the gender or race of a person in film adaptations?
Don't care all that much, but may be cases the character has to be male or female for some reason, or a certain race.

I tend to like tales as they were original created in terms of who the characters are.

Prospero's Books - Starring John Gielgud, this 1991 take was directed by Peter Greenaway, and a more artsy fartsy version. The idea is Prospero is writing The Tempest, and as he does so events play out, as if he's making characters speak and act the way he wants. Quite visually impressive, but perhaps not one for all. There's an old saying "the pen is mightier than the sword", do you find this to be so?

Tempest - directed by Paul Mazursky, this 1982 flick is a modern take on Shakespeare's tale with John Cassavetes as Phillip, an architect going through a mid life crisis. Susan Sarandon is the Ariel character, Molly Ringwald, Miranda. Raul Julia is Kalibanos (Caliban). Do you find adaptations of Shakespeare's plays that are set in different times, don't use the original dialogue, etc. more palatable to your tastes?
Yes - Same premise, but in a language and context I can better understand.
