(5) THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1968) Directed by Norman Jewison. Written by Alan Trustman. Starring Steve McQueen, Faye Dunaway, Paul Burke, Jack Weston, Gordon Pinsent. "The Thomas Crown Affair" is one of the great movie entertainments, a slick, sexy thriller that's low on substance but high on style. Steve McQueen plays a suave bank executive who believes he's pulled off the perfect heist. That is, until, he comes across a beautiful insurance investigator (Faye Dunaway). Jewison keeps things glossy and fun, experimenting with different filmmaking techniques alongside cinematographer Haskell Wexler and editor Hal Ashby. The original song "The Windmills of Your Mind" won the Oscar. Have you seen....?

(4) THE HURRICANE (1999) Directed by Norman Jewison. Screenplay Armyan Bernstein and Dan Gordon, based on the books "Lazarus and the Hurricane" by Sam Chaiton & Terry Swinton and "The Sixteenth Round: From Number 1 Contender To 45472" by Rubin Carter. Starring Denzel Washington, John Hannah, Deborah Kara Unger, Liev Schreiber, Vicellous Reon Shannon, David Paymer, Dan Hedaya, Harris Yulin, Rod Steiger. Denzel Washington gives a knockout performance in Jewison's biographical drama, which is also a powerful indictment of our criminal justice system. He plays Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, a boxer wrongfully convicted of murder by a racist police detective (Dan Hedaya). Years later, a Brooklyn teenager (Vicellous Reon Shannon) and three Canadian activists (John Hannah, Deborah Kara Unger and Liev Schreiber) set out to prove his innocence. Though criticized for its historical inaccuracies, the film still delivers a gut punch thanks in large part to Washington, who won the Golden Globe as Best Actor. Have you seen "The Hurricane"?

(3) FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (1971) Directed by Norman Jewison. Screenplay by Joseph Stein, based on his musical of the same name and stories by Sholem Aleichem. Starring Topol, Norma Crane, Leonard Frey, Molly Picon, Paul Mann. In bringing "Fiddler on the Roof" to the screen, Jewison improves on many of the musical's shortcomings by filling the screen with spectacle and mirth. Topol stars as Tevye, a Jewish peasant trying to marry off his three daughters while dealing with increasing anti-Semitism in his pre-revolutionary Russian village. The signature numbers — including "Tradition," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," and "If I Were a Rich Man" — are mounted with aplomb, with the camerawork breaking the story free of its stage roots. The film earned eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Jewison, plus Best Actor for Topol. It took home prizes for its cinematography, sound and score (the first of five victories for John Williams). Have you seen?

(2) MOONSTRUCK (1987) Directed by Norman Jewison. Written by John Patrick Shanley. Starring Cher, Nicolas Cage, Vincent Gardenia, Olympia Dukakis, Danny Aiello, Julie Bovasso, Louis Guss, John Mahoney, Feodor Chaliapin Jr., Anita Gillette. There are few movies as romantic as "Moonstruck," which is in love with the very idea of love itself: falling head-over-heels into it, abandoning all reason for it. Cher plays Loretta Castorini, a Brooklyn bookkeeper who finds herself attracted to the one-handed brother (Nicolas Cage) of her fiancee (Danny Aiello). Olympia Dukakis costars as her mother, Rose, who embarks on a journey of self-discovery after she finds out her husband (Vincent Gardenia) is cheating, leading to a tender flirtation with a professor (John Mahoney). Oscars went to Cher, Dukakis and John Patrick Shanley's sparkling screenplay. Have you seen "Moonstruck"?

(1) IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (1967) Directed by Norman Jewison. Screenplay by Stirling Silliphant, based on the novel by John Ball. Starring Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger, Warren Oates, Lee Grant, Larry Gates, Beah Richards, Quentin Dean. It was the slap heard round the world. When Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), a black detective from Philadelphia investigating a murder in the Deep South, fought back against a racist plantation owner (Larry Gates) in plain view of a white police chief (Rod Steiger), it sent shockwaves through audiences who had almost exclusively seen African Americans in more servile roles on movie screens. And that's exactly what Jewison was going for in this mystery thriller infused with a social justice message that comments on the ongoing Civil Rights Movement. More than 50 years later, "In the Heat of the Night" still retains that power. The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Steiger, while Jewison contended for Best Director.
