Scottish actor Sean Connery (1930-2020) was best known for playing Ian Fleming's character James Bond in several films. He's also appeared in many others though in a wide range of roles, below a few for your consideration...

The Name of the Rose - based on Umberto Eco's novel, this 1986 film has Connery as Franciscan friar William of Baskerville. He's on the case solving murders in a medieval abbey. A young Christain Slater is his novice Adso, with F. Murray Abraham as Inquisitor Gui. While condensed, interesting setting, several twists and some fine acting. Ever know anyone who was friar?

The Great Train Robbery - this one from 1978 was directed by Michael Crichton based on his novel which in turn is based on an actual event. Set in the mid 1800's Connery is John Simms, member of London high society, but actually Edward Pierce, master thief. With some help, he attempts to rob a moving train of a shipment of gold. A heck of a lot of fun watching plans being made and carried out. Ever been on a passenger train?

Zardoz - written and directed by John Borman in 1974, this is a strange one, but good in my opinion. Connery plays Zed, a member of the 'Brutals' controlling remnants of society in service to a giant stone head called Zardoz. He learns the head is run by a member of the 'Eternals', sealed off in a protected dome, using psychic powers to remain young. Needless to say, culture clash when Zed meets this group. Ever known anyone who claimed to have psychic abilities?

The Man Who Would Be King - based on Rudyard Kipling's, 1888 novel, this 1975 film was written and directed by John Huston. Set in 1885 India, Connery plays Daniel Dravot, who ends up being taken as a god with his pal Peachy Carnehan (Michael Caine) aiding in the deceit. Well filmed and great chemistry between Connery and Caine. Ever try to pass yourself off as someone you are not?

The Wind and the Lion - John Milius wrote and directed this 1975 film. Connery is Mulai Ahmed er Raisuni (Raisuli), Sharif and and leader of a tribal confederacy in Morocco. He finds himself mixed up in a conflict among colonial powers of the British Empire, France and Germany. This was loosely based on the real Perdicaris affair of 1904. Perhaps parallels to events going on now, what's your take?
