The film world has lost one of the finest directors to ever make art. David Lynch did not just direct movies; he crafted and created worlds that stayed with viewers long after they left the theatre (or turned off their TV sets). Best known for the TV series Twin Peaks and film Blue Velvet, Lynch had a long and powerful list of credits. Which of these David Lynch directed movies or TV shows have you watched?

The term "Lynchian" has become synonymous with specific aesthetic and narrative style pioneered by David Lynch. It encompasses a range of elements such as surrealism, dreamlike sequences, and an underlying sense of mystery. Lynch's fascination with abstraction stems from his belief in inherent ambiguity of life itself. His films, from his very first one, exhibited that. No one has captured a film's tone or atmosphere quite like Lynch, and it is doubtful anyone will ever fill his shoes. Are you a fan of his particular style of film making?

Maybe it is not surprising but Lynch was actually a talented painter. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Lynch claims he first became interested in film because he wanted to see his artwork have movement. The characters who appeared in his first breakout film, Eraserhead (1977), were drawn from his never-finished 1971 art school project Gardenback, which was inspired by one of Lynch's paintings. Lynch continued to paint, with works done primarily done in dark tones to enhance the "dreaminess" of his visions. He rarely uses color, which Lynch felt is "too real" and "limiting." That carried over to many of his films, which also were shot in black and white. Did you know he was an accomplished painter?

Lynch also drew a comic that appeared in the Los Angeles Reader from 1983 to 1992, called "The Angriest Dog in the World". He also had dabbled in the music scene. Besides having Peter Wolf—of J. Geils Band fame—as a college roommate in 1964, Lynch also tried his hand at various musical exploits of his own. These forays included directing a concert for Duran Duran in 2011, releasing two studio albums—Crazy Clown Time in 2011 and The Big Dream in 2013 —and composing music for a variety of his works including tracks in Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, The Air Is on Fire, Inland Empire, and various Twin Peaks episodes. His talent extended far beyond movies and art. He also directed commercials including ads for Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, Yves Saint Laurent, as well as Alka-Seltzer Plus, Barilla Pasta, Adidas, Playstation 2, Nissan, and Clear Blue Pregnancy Tests. Some of his more unusual commercials include a 1991 ad for the New York Department of Sanitation called "We Care About New York," which attempts to address the city's rat infestation issue, and for Georgia Coffee, which only appeared in Japan and featured a man searching through episodes of Twin Peaks, looking for his wife. He also had his own line of coffee, with the tagline "even bad coffee is better than no coffee at all" (probably why this included famous Twin Peaks scene is one of his favourites). Have you ever had a "damn fine cup of coffee" (this cup of coffee is for you, David Lynch, RIP)?
Yes!
